What are Trombetta's Engineering Services?
Trombetta's engineering services are committed to clearly defining problems, needs, and specifications for potential solutions. The identified needs suitable specifications and potential solutions are then documented in our proposal for services. Our proposal defines in clear and relevant terms the capabilities and configuration of the proposed solution. The proposal lays out what hardware and/or data Trombetta proposes to deliver and a schedule for delivery. Issuance of the proposal usually stimulates thought and initiates a Trombetta/client process of application/solution refinement and revision.

Concept Engineering Services
Trombetta will deal with elusive actuation or control problems. Our engineering services can assist in defining a process by which the actuation or control problem can be more completely defined and specifications developed. Depending on your project development status, Trombetta will begin the process of solution development in one of several ways.

Feasibility Study
Feasibility Studies are high-level studies conducted for the purpose of aquiring knowledge. These studies are used on projects with a significant amount of uncertainty and are often useful in the very early stages of project development especially in cases where there is not enough knowledge available to compile a complete design specification. In those situations, the Feasibility Study may be the tool used to clarify the design requirements. Feasibility Studies can be the beginning for a specific Trombetta engineering project.

Feasibility Studies can also be structured to perform pure analysis to examine a proposed design for assessing its capabilities. They can also be used to make a confidence assessment if design specifications are known and appear to be difficult to satisfy. In those types of difficult specification cases, a Feasibility Study quickly provides insight in making go/no go decisions. Often, Trombetta uses analysis tools like magnetic FEA (Field Element Analysis) to allow these assessments to be made without incurring the time delay and cost of prototype building.

In situations that are best handled by an iterative design/development process, the Feasibility Study may involve efforts to first define a problem to be solved and to develop a high-level concept of a solution. The concept of a first solution would likely be the lead-in for a Proof of Concept Prototype Development.

Specific Engineering Services
While the nature of the consulting engineering services is general, Trombetta will incorporate a variety of engineering services to achieve specific results.

Application Analysis and Assistance: Joint effort between the customer and Trombetta is required in order to fully understand the application. Trombetta assists in analyzing the application through the use of Trombetta's engineering resources and customer supplied equipment when required. This service includes Feasibility Studies to expeditiously determine if Trombetta can offer the best solution. If so, Trombetta will recommend the best solenoid and/or electronic control solution.

Specification and Proposal Development: Trombetta engineering and sales work together to develop an application proposal. This proposal outlines the project application, specifications and responsibilities. It also defines the items to be delivered, all associated costs and any other areas that need clarification.

Specific Application Development: Trombetta engineering can develop a specific industrial work solenoid, DC contactor, control or system from initial concept to end product for use in a customer's application. The developed product may not conform to existing Trombetta product families but may include similarities. Trombetta has a rich base of proven technology to draw upon with proven ability to combine various aspects of that technology base to arrive at unique solutions.

Specific Application Customization: Trombetta engineering can create a custom solution that is based upon an existing Trombetta product family, but optimized for use in a customers application. This may be done either by modifying an existing defined unit or by reapplying defined technologies to existing product families.

Performance Simulation and Analysis: Performance and design of industrial work solenoids, DC contactors and/or electronics is simulated at Trombetta using various resources including Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and rapid prototyping techniques. Analysis is conducted based on design data generated in order to accurately estimate the performance of industrial work solenoids, DC contactors and electronic controls. This allows for a nearly optimized solution before customer investment is made in prototypes thereby improving cost and efficiency and eliminating unnecessary delays.

Design Analysis: Existing industrial work solenoid, DC contactor and electronic designs are analyzed to determine areas of improvement. These improvements are then proposed for development to meet the specific application needs of the customer.

Failure Mode Analysis: Trombetta engineering analyzes and tests currently used customer products or systems to determine the cause of failure. A solution is then recommended to the customer.

Systems Design: Complete system designs are developed which integrate industrial work solenoids, DC contactors and electronic controls to meet a customer's specific requirements. Systems may be distributed, i.e. industrial work solenoids, DC contactors and controls are separate physical entities connected through wiring systems or they may be both electrically and physically integrated into one simple-to-install assembly.
Proof of Concept Design and Prototype Development These types of projects serve a variety of purposes all centered on determining practicality of an idea or concept before engaging in final design activity. At the Proof of Concept or Prototype Development stage, the customer's focus may be on the evaluation of their entire system design concept. In such cases, the industrial work solenoid, DC contactor or control may be a necessary component for system operation with little emphasis placed on evaluating it as a component.

Proof of Concept developments can be the beginning point for a specific Trombetta engineering project or may follow a Trombetta Feasibility Study. In the latter case, the results and discoveries of the Feasibility Study serve as part of the design input for the Proof of Concept step. Often times, the Proof of Concept step serves as a vehicle to further clarify design specifications for the final solution desired.

The Proof of Concept development process involves acquiring or creating a rough specification for a prototype. The specification is examined to determine if an existing Trombetta design can be modified to meet the requirement. If not, a new design is developed with effort to utilize as much existing Trombetta design basics as possible. Prototypes are tested in Trombetta's lab for compliance to basic specifications. Usually, the customer uses their prototype system to do more extensive testing.

The Proof of Concept development work allows continued project development without the need for fully developed specifications, the expense associated with final production design development and the expense of production documentation and final testing.

Final Production Design and Prototype Development
Final Design and Prototype Development create production ready designs with all the associated production documentation. There is considerable effort expended on planning and preparation for all aspects of production. All product verification and validation tests are planned. Development of prototypes required for testing is coordinated. Trombetta works very closely with customers to understand the customers time schedule for Prototype Development and testing and the kind of prototypes required , i.e. fit, form and function equivalent, production intent and production (production tooled).

Production Design Development can be the beginning of a Trombetta project or may follow a Feasibility Study and/or a Proof of Concept Development. As noted earlier, the information gathered in the previous studies serve as an integral part of the design input for the final design development project.

The final design development process involves acquiring or creating a complete specification. Not only does this include technical information but also anticipated production volumes, cost goals and production schedules. The complete technical specification is examined to determine if an existing Trombetta design can be modified to meet the requirement. If not, a new design is developed with effort to utilize as much existing Trombetta design basics as possible. Prototypes are tested in Trombetta's lab to verify compliance to all specifications. Usually, the Final Product Design Validation Testing is performed or facilitated by the customer with prototypes being evaluated on the intended equipment under actual field and extreme use conditions.

Trombetta's proposal will be configured to establish feasibility of achieving a solution that meets all project specifications including costs. For multi-step processes, all steps are governed by an appropriate proposal that outlines deliverables and a schedule for those items.
